Dr. Graham Birch started his career in 1984 as a mining equity analyst with the London based offices of Panmure Gordon. He then moved to Kleinwort Benson Securities and then Ord Minnett. In 1993, Dr. Birch joined Mercury Asset Management as a portfolio manager in the mining and gold sectors. Mercury Asset Management was subsequently taken over by Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and then BlackRock. Dr. Graham Birch started his career in 1984 as a mining equity analyst with the London based offices of Panmure Gordon. He then moved to Kleinwort Benson Securities and then Ord Minnett. In 1993, Dr. Birch joined Mercury Asset Management as a portfolio manager in the mining and gold sectors. Mercury Asset Management was subsequently taken over by Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and then BlackRock. In 1999, Dr. Birch was promoted to Managing Director and Head of the Natural Resources Investment Team at BlackRock in London, a position he held until 2010. This team was ultimately responsible for US$50 billion of investments in Gold & Mining, Energy & Alternative Energy, Agriculture and Commodities. Dr. Birch has direct fund management experience in long only funds, hedge funds and income funds – all within the natural resources sector. Dr. Birch left BlackRock in 2010 to pursue his interests in agriculture and is the owner of a 2,100 acre farming operation in Dorset. He is currently a non-executive director of Hochschild Mining; a mid-tier silver and gold mining company. Until 2018, he was a non-executive director of ETF Securities – a pioneer in the area of precious metals ETFs. Dr. Birch has a PhD in Mining Geology from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London.
